چکیده

THE analysis of colour defects and individual differences in normal colour vision requires an apparatus in which spectral stimuli are used. It should be possible to determine the following: (1) Relative luminous efficiency of spectral light (luminosity curve). (2) Threshold of wavelength discrimination in spectrum (hue discrimination curve). (3) Threshold of saturation discrimination in spectrum (purity discrimination curve). (4) Trichromatic coefficients of spectral colours (colour mixture curves). In clinical practice these tests are too time-consuming, and the examination has therefore to be limited to the determination of a few points on every curve at various wavelengths, but it is desirable that in some special cases the analysis should be carried out more completely with the same apparatus. The Nagel anomaloscope, the only apparatus in general use for detecting defective colour vision, was designed to make one colour match: between monochromatic yellow and a mixture of red and green in the spectrum. It is a direct vision spectroscope with a circular field of about 2 degrees diameter, divided into two halves. The lower half of the field is illuminated by monochromatic yellow light from a slit of variable width, which can be controlled by the right-hand screw. The upper half of the field is illuminated by a mixture of monochromatic red and green. How the beams are made monochromatic will be clear from the diagram of the optical system of the anomaloscope (Fig. 1). The ratio between the widths of the slits for red

Evolution of vertebrate colour vision.

Recent years have witnessed a growing interest in learning how colour vision has evolved. This trend has been fuelled by an enhanced understanding of the nature and extent of colour vision among contemporary species, by a deeper understanding of the paleontological record and by the application of new tools from molecular biology. This review provides an assessment of the progress in understand...

Colour vision in AIDS patients without HIV retinopathy

Patients suffering from AIDS develop ocular complications, the most frequent being HIV retinopathy. It is however not clear, if functional visual impairments can be observed as early indicators of ocular complications, before clinical diagnosis of HIV retinopathy is made at fundus examination. To address this issue, we measured colour vision in a group of 49 AIDS subjects with normal clinical f...

Five cricketers with abnormal colour vision.

Five cricketers with abnormal colour vision, all of whom had mild deuteranomaly, reported occasions when they had lost sight of the ball when the background was the green grass of the playing field or the green of grassy banks or trees surrounding the playing field. While these five cricketers demonstrate that mild deuteranomaly does not preclude playing cricket successfully at a competitive le...

Can clinical colour vision tests be used to predict the results of the Farnsworth lantern test?

Clinicians usually do not have access to a lantern test when making an occupational assessment of the ability of a person with defective colour vision to recognise signal light colours: they must rely on the results of ordinary clinical tests. While all colour vision defectives fail the Holmes Wright Type B lantern test and most fail the Holmes Wright Type A lantern, 35% of colour vision defect...

Saturation - specific pattern of acquired colour vision deficiency in two clinical populations revealed by the method of triads

Subjective colour spaces were reconstructed for persons occupationally exposed to mercury (Hg) and patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM-2), two groups at risk for acquired colourvision deficiency, and compared with healthy normal trichromats. Judgments of colour dissimilarity were collected with the method of triads, applied to a composite assortment of colour samples. These were drawn fr...
